Back where I started… May 12, 2012

Yesterday I woke up and all I was thinking was “a month without fishing… a month without fishing…”. It’s a fact that I have to drive more than 200 klms to reach the nearest wild trout river to fish and being unemployed, gas is one of the main reasons holding me back. Anyway… there is a little rainbow trout stream in a village about half that distance. A local family built a rainbow trout hatchery about 40 years ago to serve fresh fish in their tavern. Years after years the waters are now filled with rainbow trout that somehow escaped the hatchery and spawned, making the creek a great rainbow trout fishery.
I know what I did THIS Easter… April 30, 2012

A couple of weeks ago, during Easter, my girlfriend and I visited our good friends Chloe and Stelios who live in London. This was our first time in the UK and there were lots of things for us to do, lots of places to visit and of course it was an opportunity for me to fish some very interesting waters.
After a lot of research before the trip, I finally decided to fish a beat on the River Test which is no doubt one of the most famous and most beautiful chalkstreams in the Island. So, I booked a guided day on a gorgeous beat of the Test, which I found was a great chance for me to fish with an experienced angler to give me precious advice of how to read and fish better this kind of waters and also give me a few hints about my casting. After all… I’m sick of fishing alone every time. Guide Colin Alexander was the best company I could have on the river and with the weather on our side we enjoyed a fantastic full day of fishing for brown trout and grayling…
Accessing a river like this is a bit expensive, but I think it is worth its money for at least once in your lifetime. I will leave the pictures to you and keep the rest to myself as I think that describing such a day with a few words is impossible.

17th March 2012
Our day started around 09:00 am. We took our time and had a long breakfast. Leaving the hotel we followed a shortcut-dirt road leading to the location we had fished yesterday; the same road I’ve taken about 6 months ago to discover some of the best locations for fly fishing around this area.

16th March 2012.
It’s been exactly a month since the opening of the trout season in Greece and I am out for my first fishing for 2012. New waders, new reel & fly line, and new flies tied as well.
This time my brother Chris joined me. We planned to stay in a hotel for one night so we could have an extra day on the river. We woke up around 04:40 am, had breakfast, put our stuff in the car and headed out of the big city. After about 100 klms of road we made a quick stop for a cup of coffee ‘to go’ and continued on our way. At some point we left the highway and took the road leading to the mountains. The more altitude we gained the more snow we were seeing.

… and the stunning contrast of the deciduous plants. Photos from the same river, captured in two different seasons (early spring / mid-summer) and from slightly different angles.
I know what I did last… Easter February 23, 2012

It’s really nice to remind yourself of nice trips you have had and this one is the perfect example. During the last Easter holidays I had the opportunity to visit a mountain village of northern Greece and stay there for 5 days with a few friends of mine. One of my friends origins from that village and owns a beautiful house up there so we were offered his hospitality.
It is a great feeling waking up, having your breakfast by the fireplace, grabbing your rod and have to walk only 5 minutes to get to the river and fish. But I think I would better stop writing and have the photos to speak the words for me.
